Bottled Water vs. Alkaline Water: How Much Are You Paying?06-16-2010When you go to the store and see a flat of bottled water for around 2 dollars, you think, wow, what a great deal! When you go to the store and see a filter for anywhere between 50 and 600 dollars, you think, no way am I buying that! In a day, 600 dollars is a lot compared to 2 dollars, but what about over 10 years, 20 years or even 40 years? How much money would you be willing to spend for the convenience of a bottle of water? How much would you be willing to risk your health to continue drinking bottled water? The cost of water might not seem like much when you look at it on a daily basis, but what about the cost to your health? What about the dent in your wallet paying for bottled water makes over time? It’s not only cheaper to use alkaline water over bottled water, but it’s also healthier for you.
The doctors tell us all to drink 8 cups of water everyday at 8 ounces per cup. Now, doctors have increased that number to around 9 cups of day for women and 13 cups a day for men. Roughly, that’s anywhere between ½ to a whole gallon of water that you should be consuming every day. These numbers vary with age, level of activity, gender and environment, but generally speaking, 64 ounces a day is considered universal criteria for water consumption. So over an entire week, the average person drinks about 10 gallons of water.
Taking those 10 gallons per week, let’s compare the cost of bottled water versus alkaline water. Over one year, a consumer will spend 130 to 780 dollars on bottled water, depending on whether it is delivered or if the consumer hauls the water himself. 130 dollars doesn’t seem that bad for an entire year’s worth of water that is both convenient and tastes good, but what about over a longer period of time, like 40 years? Over 40 years, the consumer will spend anywhere between 5,200 and 31,200 dollars on bottled water, again depending on whether it is delivered of personally hauled. Think about what you could buy with 5,200 dollars, or 31,200 dollars! You could buy a car just by saving the money you’d spend on bottled water over 40 years.
So what about alkaline water? Generally, filtered water can vary on price depending on the type of filtered water system that you use. For example, over a one year period, you could spend 93 dollars on a plastic faucet mount, 150 on a pour-through pitcher, 330 on an alkaline system, 406 on Distillation, or 600 on a mid-range Reverse Osmosis system. It seems like a lot when you get beyond 150 dollars, but over a long period of time, the initial cost is worth it. 330 dollars spent on an alkaline system doesn’t seem like much when compared to the cost of the system over 40 years at only 1,730 dollars. That means you spend only 1,400 dollars over 39 years on your water supply. That’s more than 3,000 dollars less than the cheapest bottled water you can find! Not only are alkaline water systems cheaper than bottled water, they are healthier for you too. Alkaline water takes out impurities, like chlorine, leaving you with good tasting water that benefits your health. Overall, bottled water really has no upside to it at all.
